Nepal has suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup. The Nepalese team who were very close to the historic first-ever win in the mega event suffered a painful one-wicket defeat against Scotland.
The Scottish side were 58/9 after 17 overs while chasing 74 runs. However, the last pair scored 16 runs in just 10 balls to take Scotland home. Meanwhile, Nepal suffers a back-to-back defeat in the tournament.
Chasing a target of 74 runs, Scotland were 11/3 in the fifth over as Nepal were in complete control right from the start. Pippa Sproul kept anchoring the inning and added 22 runs for the fourth wicket. However, Nepal picked three quick wickets and the scenario was 37/6 in the 14th over. With Sproul’s presence, Scotland believed but Rachana Chaudhary sent her back for 35 and grabbed another wicket in the 17th over to take Nepal close to victory.
However, Scotland added 11 runs from Riya Sharma’s over and snatched a victory in the next over. Gabriella Fontenla made a game-changing 12 runs from nine balls as Scotland chased the target in 18.4 overs.
For Nepal, Rachana Chaudhary and Seemana KC picked up two wickets each. Puja Mahato and Krishma Gurung also grabbed one each while three dismissals were run out.
Earlier in the first innings, Nepal were bowled out for 73 runs. After choosing to bat first at YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi, the Nepalese team suffered a collapse in the later stages and was dismissed in 18.5 overs.
Nepal lost Sana Praveen cheaply in the second over. Sabitri Dhami and Puja Mahato then added 25 runs for the second wicket before Sabitri departed for 10 runs. Puja kept anchoring the inning but there was no significant support from the other end.
Puja top scored with 27 runs from 43 balls, with the help of three boundaries. No other batters were able to cross the double-digit score. Nepal were 64/6 after 16 overs, but they lost three in the same over. Anu Kadayat scored a crucial five not out at the end.
For Scotland, Maisie Maceira picked up a fifer. Maceira who picked up three wickets in the same over ended with a figure of 3.5-0-15-5. Nayma Sheikh and Amie Baldie picked up two wickets each.
Nepal will play the final group-stage match against Australia on January 22.
