In a heartbreaking turn of events for Nepal cricket fans, the much-anticipated final of the ICC U19 World Cup Asia Qualifier between Nepal U19 and Afghanistan U19 was abandoned due to persistent rain and a wet outfield at the Mulpani Cricket Ground on Friday.
With both teams unbeaten in the tournament, having secured three wins each, the final match was effectively a do-or-die encounter. A direct ticket to the ICC U19 World Cup 2026 was on the line, with Afghanistan holding a slight edge over Nepal due to a superior Net Run Rate (NRR).
Despite hopes of play resuming, heavy morning showers left the outfield unplayable. Match officials conducted multiple inspections, with the final one taking place at 2:00 PM NST, after which the match was officially called off. As a result, both teams were awarded a point each, allowing Afghanistan to qualify on the basis of NRR.
A large crowd had gathered at Mulpani, hoping to witness Nepal clinch a historic qualification on home soil. The disappointment was palpable as fans left the ground in silence, their hopes dashed not by defeat, but by the weather.
Ironically, Nepal had defeated Afghanistan in the ICC U19 World Cup 2024, forcing the latter into the qualifying stages for 2026. However, this time it was Afghanistan who progressed, leaving Nepal to reflect on what could have been.
This marks a bitter end to an otherwise impressive campaign by the young Nepalese side.
