Nepal suffers five-wicket defeat to Bangladesh in U19 Women’s T20 World Cup opener

Nepal began their ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup campaign with a loss, suffering a five-wicket defeat to Bangladesh at the YSD-UKM Cricket Oval in Bangi.

Chasing a modest target of 53, Bangladesh stumbled early, losing two wickets within the first two overs. Nepal struck again in the following over, reducing Bangladesh to 11/3 by the third over. However, a steady 21-run partnership between Sadia Islam (16) and Sumaiya Akter (12) for the fourth wicket helped Bangladesh regain control.

Bangladesh completed the chase in 13.2 overs, losing five wickets. Afia Ashima Era remained unbeaten for nine runs. 

For Nepal, Rachana Chaudhary, Riya Sharma, Seemana KC and Puja Mahato picked up one wicket each.

Earlier, The Nepalese were bowled out for a mere total. Nepal’s batting failure saw them bowled out for a tiny total of 52 runs in 18.2 overs.

Put in to bat first, Nepal’s batting lineup faltered against a dominant Bangladeshi bowling attack, reaching just 21/4 by the 10th over. Puja Mahato had a tough outing, managing only two runs off 18 balls before being run out. Sabitri Dhami and Sony Pakhrin were dismissed cheaply, scoring one and a duck, respectively.

Sana Praveen top-scored for Nepal with 19 runs. Seemana KC who scored Nepal’s first boundary in 12th over made 10 runs. No other batters were able to cross the double-digit mark. Alisha Yadav and Riya Sharma scored one boundary each.

Jannatul Maoua was the pick of a bowler for Bangladesh with two wickets to her name. Five Nepalese batters were dismissed in the form of run out.

Nepal will face Scotland in the next match on January 20. Nepal is in Group D alongside Bangladesh, Australia and Scotland.
