Rohit Paudel’s side Toronto Nationals has clinched the title of Global T20 League Canada 2024. Toronto triumphed over the Montreal Tigers by eight wickets in the final to become the champions of the tournament’s fourth season.
Toronto, under the leadership of Colin Munro, had a remarkable and unexpected campaign. They qualified for the playoffs by finishing fourth in the standings and faced Bangla Tigers Mississauga in the eliminator. The match was nearly abandoned, but the Umpire decided to proceed with a super-over. However, captain Shakib Al Hasan refused to participate and didn’t show up for the toss, leading to Toronto being declared the winner. They defeated Brampton Wolves in the Qualifier 2 to book a spot in the final.
Rohit Paudel was not part of the playing XI for the final but he took one catch coming as a substitute fielder. In the crucial match, Toronto limited Montreal to 96/9 in their 20 overs, with Jason Behrendorff standing out as the top bowler, claiming three wickets (4-0-8-3).
Toronto chased the target of 97 in 15 overs, losing only a couple of wickets. Andries Gous top scored with 58 runs whereas Rassie van der Dussen played a supportive role with 30 runs.
With this victory, Rohit became the third Nepalese player to be part of a GT20-winning team. Sompal Kami won the title in 2019 with the Winnipeg Hawks, and Dipendra Singh Airee claimed the title in 2023 with the Montreal Tigers.
Nepal captain, Rohit Paudel played a couple of matches in his debut overseas franchise league. He missed the first game due to a visa issue. In his first appearance, Paudel made an impact with a brilliant run-out and a spectacular catch but didn’t get an opportunity to bat. In the next match, he scored 10 runs off 25 balls in a game where his team was bowled out for just 81. He didn’t get any match time after that.
