Jay Shah, who currently serves as the honorary secretary of the BCCI, has been elected unopposed as the Independent Chairperson of the International Cricket Council (ICC). He will take on his new role starting December 1, succeeding Greg Barclay.
It was announced on August 20 that current ICC chairperson Greg Barclay would not pursue a third term and would step down at the end of his tenure in November. Barclay has been in the role of ICC chairperson for two consecutive terms, beginning in 2020.
The deadline for the board of directors to file nominations for the next chairperson was August 27. If more than one candidate had been nominated, an election would have been necessary, but Shah was the only nominee.
At the age of 35, Jay Shah becomes the youngest to take on the role. “I am honoured by the nomination as Chair of the International Cricket Council,” Shah said. “I am dedicated to working with the ICC team and our member nations to expand cricket globally. We must balance various formats, embrace advanced technologies, and introduce our major events to new markets. Our aim is to make cricket more inclusive and popular than ever.”
It is believed that Shah has a positive relationship with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). During the ICC annual meeting, CAN’s President and Secretary spoke briefly with him, and he committed to supporting and advancing Nepal cricket. Recently, the Nepal team trained at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, thanks to an initiative by Shah and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
