Australian batting maestro Steven Smith has announced his retirement from One Day International (ODI) cricket, bringing an end to an illustrious career in the 50-over format. The 35-year-old revealed his decision following Australia’s recent ICC Champions Trophy semi-final exit against India.
Smith, a key figure in Australia’s white-ball dominance over the past decade, leaves the ODI scene with an impressive record of 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries and 35 half-centuries across 170 matches. Having played a pivotal role in Australia’s World Cup victories in 2015 and 2023, his contributions with the bat and leadership will be remembered for years to come.
Speaking on his decision, Smith expressed gratitude for his ODI journey, stating, “It has been an incredible ride representing Australia in ODIs. Winning two World Cups was beyond my dreams, and I will forever cherish those moments. However, I feel it’s the right time to step aside and allow the next generation to take over.”
Despite stepping away from ODIs, Smith confirmed that he remains committed to Test cricket, where he has been a dominant force, and is open to representing Australia in T20Is if required. His departure marks the end of an era for Australian cricket, but fans will still get to witness his brilliance in the red-ball format.
