Nepali cricket has always held a special place in the hearts of fans, but in recent years, many had grown frustrated with the old-fashioned decision-making, slow progress, and lack of transparency from the cricket board. However, over the last year, the game has witnessed significant progress and structural improvements, thanks to the leadership of Paras Khadka. As the secretary of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), Khadka has just completed his first year in office, and his impact has been nothing short of remarkable.
On September 23, 2023, Paras Khadka, one of Nepal’s most revered cricket figures, was elected as the CAN secretary. While most of the key positions within CAN were decided unanimously, Khadka’s election was a tightly contested affair. In a decisive victory, he defeated Prashant Bikram Malla, solidifying his position as a leader committed to the development of Nepali cricket.

Having played for and led Team Nepal for over a decade, Paras Khadka has accomplished countless feats, earning him the title of the nation’s greatest cricketer. After leading the team for so many years, few understand the ups and downs, struggles, and challenges of representing Nepal’s cricket team better than him. This deep connection to the game and players fueled his eagerness to take on a leadership role off the field. His decision was met with immense support and high expectations from fans, who believed in his ability to bring positive change.
From the moment he assumed his role, Khadka proved that having the right man in the right place can truly make a difference. His tenure has been marked by several pivotal reforms and initiatives, which have already begun to reshape the future of cricket in Nepal.
What has Paras Khadka’s first year as CAN secretary been like?
Khadka’s leadership has mainly focused on strengthening the board, elevating domestic cricket, the financial well-being of players and promoting grassroots cricket development.
One of the initial steps taken by CAN after Khadka’s arrival was to organize the PM Cup in a round-robin format. This change allowed teams to gain more match exposure and keep players actively engaged. The top four teams would then qualify for the Elite Cup, which features red ball, multi-day format cricket.
In an effort to bring more organization and transparency to the sport, CAN introduced its first-ever annual cricket calendar 2024.

Also, one of the most notable tasks has been the formation of the Nepal A team which works as the bridge between the Nepal and the Nepal U19 cricket team. This initiative has created a platform for emerging players to showcase their talent at a higher level.
The number of central contracts for cricketers (both men and women) was increased also implementing a higher salary, ensuring greater financial security for them. Currently, 31 men and 19 women players are under CAN’s central contract. Emerging players (both men and women) were also given a contract. Only 18 men and 12 women were in CAN’s central contract 2023.
CAN successfully hosted the A teams of two Test-playing nations, Ireland and West Indies. Khadka acknowledged that the cricket association had been operating at a loss; however, after several successful home series, CAN managed to generate substantial revenue, leading to improved financial stability for the organization.
In a bold move aimed at elevating domestic cricket, Khadka also ensured that CAN will take full control of organizing the Nepal Premier League (NPL). By managing the NPL in-house, CAN can maintain higher standards and provide a stable, well-run platform for the country’s top cricketers. This initiative has already attracted both local and international attention, boosting the profile of Nepali cricket on the global stage.
Recently, CAN declared that it will be offering salaries to 35 provincial players. This is a commendable initiative to encourage and develop more players at the provincial level. This step will play a pivotal role in boosting grassroots cricket as well.
In addition to these domestic improvements, Khadka has worked tirelessly to strengthen Nepal’s ties with international cricket boards, particularly the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). These relationships have opened new opportunities for Nepal’s players to gain international exposure through bilateral cricket exchanges and training programs.
These are just a few of the key decisions made during Khadka’s first year as CAN secretary. Additionally, in close collaboration with President Chatur Bahadur Chand, he has been actively working on numerous initiatives aimed at further advancing Nepal Cricket.
In just one year, Paras has proven that effective leadership and bold decision-making can bring about transformative change. If this is just the beginning, the future of Nepali cricket under his stewardship is brighter than ever.
