Nepal U19 ended their bilateral series against Afghanistan U19 on a high note, securing a comprehensive 85-run victory (DLS method) in the third and final match, despite losing the series 2-1. The win serves as a timely morale boost ahead of the ICC U19 World Cup Asia Qualifier, set to begin on April 13 in Kathmandu.
Invited to bat first in a rain-threatened encounter, Nepal made a strong start, reaching 121/1 at one stage. Openers Sahil Patel and Niraj Yadav laid the foundation with fluent knocks of 46 and 42 respectively. However, the middle order faltered under pressure, and Nepal were eventually bowled out for 191 in 44.5 overs. Naren Bhatta (22) and Roshan BK (28 off 23 balls) helped push the total to a competitive score.
Hafeez Zadran was the pick of a bowler grabbing four wickets whilst Zaitullah Shaheen and Abdul Aziz pocketed a couple of wickets each.
In reply, Afghanistan struggled from the outset, losing wickets in clusters as Nepal’s bowlers struck at regular intervals. By the 20.1-over mark, Afghanistan found themselves reeling at 46/6 when rain interrupted play. With no possibility of resumption, the match was decided by the DLS method, handing Nepal a convincing 85-run win.
For Nepal, Aprajit Poudel picked up two whereas Dayanand Mandal, Santosh Yadav, Bipin Sharma and Ashok Dhami grabbed one scalp each.
While the series went 2-1 in Afghanistan U19’s favour, Nepal’s dominant display in the final match will instill confidence ahead of the crucial qualifiers. With the ICC U19 World Cup Asia Qualifier set to be hosted at home, Nepal will look to build on this momentum and stake their claim for a spot in the global event.
The Qualifier kicks off on April 13 in Upper and Lower Mulpani Cricket Ground.
