The son of former South Africa international Dale Benkenstein, Luc bowls legspin and made his senior debut for Essex at the age of 16 – against his dad’s former club, Durham – after impressing on trial. The following summer, he marked himself as one to watch when claiming 6 for 42 against Glamorgan in the Royal London Cup, the eighth-best figures for Essex in List A cricket. He was named as England’s vice-captain for the Under-19 World Cup in January 2024.
